Mangaluru: Though environmentalists of Dakshina Kannada district are holding the detrimental Yettinahole project responsible for the drought-like situation in the district,  district in-charge Minister U T Khader has justified the project and stated that lack of summer rain is the reason behind the intense water paucity in the district.

Addressing the reporters at the District Congress office, on Sunday, May 19, Khader said, “ I don’t agree with the opinion of the environmentalists that Yettinahole project is the reason for the drought-like situation in Dakshina Kannada district. The summer rainfalls play a vital role in availability of water in our rivers. There has been no rainfall this time, which is the reason for the drought-like situation now”.

Pointing out at the reckless deforestation and destruction of the biodiversity of the Western Ghats for the sake of Yettinahalole project, reporters asked the need of undertaking Yettinahole project. Responding to it Khader said, “Yettinahole project was undertaken only after taking the opinions of the experts. It is the duty of the government to provide water to the parched regions and government needs to respond the grievances of the public”.

Stored water is enough until June 6

Thanking people for their cooperation with the present water rationing system, Khader informed that stored water in Thumbe vented dam is quite enough until June 6. “ A total of 20 tankers are engaged in providing water to the elevated areas and five additional tankers would be pressed to service soon. A total of 15 borewells were dug in the city limits and geologists were asked to identify additional spots to dig more borewells. If anyone faces problem in procuring water, they can contact helpline numbers – 0824-2220362, 2220303, Khader informed.

MLC Hareesh Kumar, Congress leaders Sadashiv Ullal, Ishwar Ullal, Mohammed Monu, Santhosh Kumar among others were present.
