Mangaluru: The Urology Department of Yenepoya University Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte, successfully performed cancer related ‘kidney preservation surgery’ through the advanced Robotically-assisted Surgery System, making it the first advanced treatment in Karnataka’s Karavali and north Kerala regions.

It has been two years and a half since Yenepoya University Medical College Hospital installed the Robotically-assisted Surgery System and has undertaken 360 successful surgeries.

The Urology Department team including Dr. Mujeebu Rahiman, Dr. Altaf Khan and Dr. Nischith D Souza has performed more than 20 successful kidney preservation surgeries.

In the traditional medical practice for kidney related cancer, the entire kidney or the surrounding tissues will be surgically removed. However, in the advanced Robotically-assisted Surgery System, only the cancer-affected areas or tissues will be removed through ‘Nephron-Sparing Surgery’ also known as ‘Partial Nephrectomy.’ Very few tissues or parts are lost in this type of surgery. This surgery is very useful in treating cancer which has spread to nearby organs and is a boon to patients with a single kidney.

Kidney preservation surgery can be efficiently performed through Robotically-assisted Surgery System. Patients who undergo treatment through Robotically-assisted Surgery System will recover soon because under this treatment, the cancer in the kidney can be removed with very little blood loss and pain.

Considering the fact that economically backward people will not be able to afford this treatment, Chancellor of Yenepoya University, Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, Vice-Chancellor M Vijayakumar and Financial Director of Yenepoya Group, Farhad Yenepoya have assured to provide treatment to deserving patients at a low cost.
