Week-long lockdown kick-starts in DK district; M’luru wears deserted look

Mangaluru: The week-long lockdown in Dakshina Kannada began on Wednesday evening and on Thursday morning the city woke up to empty and deserted streets.

The lockdown will be in place till July 23, 5 am. The lockdown has been implemented in Dakshina Kannada district keeping in mind the spiking cases of COVID-19 in the district.

The essential commodities like vegetables, fruits etc will be available during the lockdown from 8 am to 11 am. Though only a few shops remained open on Thursday morning, not many people were seen purchasing the essentials. The hustle-bustle in some of the busiest locations in Mangaluru City- Central Market, Kadri Market etc was not seen on the first day of the lockdown.

Public transport system have been brought to complete halt. No shopping malls, theatres, sports facilities will be available. No public programmes, wedding ceremonies, religious gatherings will be allowed.

The containment zones will be closed completely. The district registered a total of 76 new COVID-19 positive cases on Wednesday. The total COVID tally of the districts  tands at 2,520 with 45 COVID fatalities so far.
