Sullia ready for 1st phase LS polls, security measures in place

Sullia: As the town gears up for Lok Sabha elections, all the EVMs, VVPATs and other election-related materials were arranged in the mustering centre at the Nehru Memorial College, here on Wednesday, April 17.

All the polling officers, security personnel and staff arrived at their respective polling booths.

For this, a total of 79 vehicles which included 27 KSRTC buses, 37 jeeps and 25 vans were used to drop the officials to their respective booths.

Around 18 sector officers, three flying squads, three video surveillance teams and five checkposts have been arranged.

As the polling officials have been given Election Duty Certificates (EDC), they are eligible to vote from the respective booths they are officiating. For on duty drivers and police, postal ballot system is arranged.

A total of 1102 EDC and 309 postal ballots are already given to the polling officials concerned and police.

231 polling booths for 2 Lakh electorates

Assistant Returning Officer B T Manjunath said, “Sullia Assembly constituency comprises of 231 polling booths which comprises of 99, 631 male and 1, 00, 948 female voters.”

“In these Guthigaru Higher Primary School and Kadaba Higher Primary School has been identified as booths reserved for women. Bandadka Sri Ramakrishna Higher Primary School is identified as traditional polling booth”, he added.

He said, “Webcasting will be carried out in 13 polling booths with tight security. About 58 micro observers have been appointed. Wheelchair arrangements have been made for the specially abled electorates. Reading glass and walking sticks will be provided at the booths. As six places as identified shadow network zones, network arrangements have been made.”

Tight security force deployed

As security measures one DySP, three CI, five SI, 16 ASI, 50 Head Constables, 116 Constables, 110 Home Guards, and three Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and District Armed Reserve (DAR) have been deployed.

Naxal prone areas have been given high priority security with special forces. Around 18 mobile squads are conducting surveillance already.

Special kit for police on duty

Police and Home Guards who are in duty, are given special kits by the Superintendent of Police B M Laxmi Prasad.

Around 300 special kits have been given which was distributed by Sullia Circle Inspector R Satish Kumar.

The kit consists of biscuits, soap, toothpaste, tooth brush, shaving set, candle and matchbox.
