Mangaluru: The St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) in collaboration with Alternative Learning Systems (ALS), New Delhi, inaugurated the St. Aloysius Institute of Civil Services (SAICS), here on Tuesday, June 4.
The chief guest of the programme was Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese.
Speaking on the occasion, Bishop Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha said that it was a most awaited dream of the people of the city to have one such civil service learning institute. He mentioned that the primary objective of SAICS would be to empower the youth by getting them trained in civil services and mould them into better citizens of the country. Meanwhile, he exhorted the civil service aspirants to strive and make the country corruption-free.
Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, a guest of honour, said, “The preparation that goes into attempting a civil service exam is not a cake walk. Always make it a point to focus on societal issues and also on your personality development.” He narrated how he got into the civil service sector and reflected on the vital qualities of becoming an efficient officer.
Addressing the gathering, another guest of honour former MLA J R Lobo said that this institute would help produce IAS officers mainly from the southern belt citing that till date most of the IAS officers recruited were from the northern region.
He called on the aspirants to never be greedy for money and salary, but inculcate a quality of serving the society.
Rev. Fr. Dionysius Vaz SJ, Rector of St. Aloysius Institutions gave his presidential address.
Rev. Dr. Parveen Martis SJ delivered the welcome address.
Dr. Rose Veera D’Souza from the Department of Political Science and Coordinator of SAICS, proposed a vote of thanks.
Dr. Joyce Sabeena Lobo compered the programme.
Philanthropist Michael D’Souza and ALS CEO Rithesh Handa too were invited as the guests of honour and were present.
