Social activist M K Harishchandra passes away at 85

Mangaluru: Renowned boat-builder, engineer, social worker, patron of social activities, donor and the most influential person in the Devadiga community, M K Harishchandra (85) passed away here on September 1, at a private hospital.

He is survived by his wife Vimala, daughter Sharmila Sherigar (residing in Dubai), sons Uday and Nanda Kishore, and other family members.

In 1973, Harishchandra started Marine Crafts and Equipment in Bunder, Mangaluru. He was a simple and straightforward person. He also had a deep concern for his community and tried his best to uplift them.

He was also popular for supporting the needy as he provided scholarships and educational aid to many children and supported various organizations of his community.

Harishchandra was honoured with the ‘Indira Priyadarshini National Award’ in 1995 for his contribution to the business sector. He also served as a trustee at Sri Anantha Padmanabha Temple, Kudupu and helped various temples during the renovations.

His son-in-law, Harish Sherigar (businessman, Kannada and Tulu film producer, founder of Acme Building Materials Trading LLC. UAE & Oman), employees of ACME, family members, relatives, friends and well-wishers have condoled his sad demise.
