Mangaluru: A city-based social activist, on Wednesday, May 6, filed a complaint against the forest department in connection with the death of an Indian Gaur bull that wandered into the city on Tuesday.

In his complaint filed with the Barke Police Station, social activist Gerard Towers asked urged the police to file an FIR and conduct an inquiry into the rescue operations that were conducted by the forest department officials.

It can be recalled that a young male Indian Gaur wandered into the city on the outskirts of the Kodialguttu area in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. He was captured after being shot with tranquillisers twice by the forest officials. Unfortunately, it came to light that the wild animal had died in a few hours later.

Animal activists have alleged that the bull died due to a possible overdose of tranquillizers or due to stress resulting from the drug. The death of the bull has caused some outrage among activists and citizens as this is not the first time that a wild animal has died after being captured by the forest department officials.

“I have seen more than 50% of the animals dying during or after rescuing operations,” Towers wrote in his complaint to the Barke Police and asked them to conduct a post-mortem of the animal and to check for “physical marks” on the body.

He urged the police to book a criminal case against the persons involved in the “rescue operation” under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act if any injuries are found on the animal’s body.
