School restricts students from writing SSLC exam fearing low pass percentage

Bantwal: A private school in Bantwal has become the subject of debate for allegedly not registering four of its students for the SSLC exams this year, as they anticipated their failure in the examination leading to low a pass percentage.

The incident happened in a private unaided Kannada medium school in Allipade of the Bantwal taluk. The school did not register four of its students for this year’s SSLC examination, as they were not good at studies. The school feared that if the students failed it would reduce the pass percentage of the school.

The issue was allegedly discussed with the students’ parents, by the teachers when they were in class 9.

The teachers then allegedly suggested that the students be promoted to class 10 on the condition that they should appear for the SSLC examinations in the next year and not in this year, to which the parents agreed at that time.

However, the students’ parents have now realised the gravity of the fact that their children will lose an entire year.

When Block Education officer Shivakumar (BEO) was informed about this incident, he rushed to the school and collected information from the school teachers and the parents. He reportedly served a notice seeking the submission of a detailed report of the incident within 24 hours.

Assuring that appropriate action would be taken against the school for their actions, he said that it is not right to focus only on the pass percentage and restrain students from writing the examination.
