Mangaluru: A fire broke out in the accommodation area of an ocean research vessel, Sagar Sampada, which had 46 crew members on board, on Friday, March 15 night. However, none were injured in the fire.
According to the sources, the vessel Sagar Sampada was 35 nautical miles off Mangaluru. On receiving information about the fire at around 10 pm, two Indian Coast Guard vessels namely ICGS Vikram and ICGS Sujay rushed for assistance to the spot along with other merchant vessels and helped in bringing fire under control. The fire was extinguished at about 1.30 am.
The research vessel is now heading towards Mangaluru for additional shore assistance and it is expected to arrive in Mangaluru on Saturday at around 3 pm, sources from coast guard informed. Sources also informed that a total of 16 scientists were among the crew members on board the ship.
