Mangaluru: In order to prevent further suicides and other untoward incidents from occurring at the Nethravathi bridge near Ullal, safety barriers and CCTV cameras will soon be installed.
This decision was taken during a meeting held at the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) office on Saturday, January 18. Considering the number of suicides at the bridge, Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath had raised the need to instal CCTV cameras and safety barriers on both sides of the bridge.
Responding to this, Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh instructed the officials to take measures to install CCTV cameras and also to install safety barriers. An action plan will be prepared soon for the safety barriers, which is likely to be placed for approval during the next meeting.
It can be noted that the Nethravathi river has been a ‘suicide point’ for a long time, however, the issue earned a spotlight on the world stage after the suicide of Café Coffee Day owner V G Siddhartha, who jumped off the bridge and into the river last year.
MLC Ivan D’Souza, MUDA Commissioner Srikanth Rao, MCC Commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde and others were present.
