Repair roads before seeking our votes: Residents caution MCC candidates

Mangaluru: The state election commission recently announced the date for the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) election and the political parties are busy finalising their candidates for all 60 wards. Some candidates, who want to contest in the election and are confident of securing a party ticket, are busy convincing the electorate.

The residents of Maryhill and other surrounding areas, however, have placed a huge banner in their area which reads “No vote for you until you show progress in my city”. Through this banner, the people of Maryhill and the surrounding areas are demanding, from those who come to their doorsteps seeking votes, that the stretch between Maryhill Mount Carmel and Shree Venkatramana Temple Road be repaired.

The banner also questions the political leaders as to why they repair roads only when the Chief Minister or Prime Minister pays a visit to the city and not now. “Our precious votes are not meant for you to enjoy all the government facilities, but to serve the people. Don’t neglect the voters and fulfil our demands before coming to our doorsteps to seek votes,” the banner says.

Residents to press NOTA button

Fed up with the pathetic condition of the roads, the residents are now planning to press the “NOTA” (None Of The Above) button during the MCC election. Srikanth Bhat Harikandige, a resident of the area told Newskarnataka.com that, for the past 22 years, no elected representative of their area has attempted to even asphalt the stretch. “Even though the stretch is used by hundreds of people and school children, the elected representatives did not take any measures to asphalt the stretch. Unless and until the political parties give us a written assurance of asphalting the stretch, we will stick to our decision of choosing the NOTA option,” he said.
