Kundapur : In a clear-cut case of caste based discrimination, a priest who was supposed to solemnize a wedding at Trasi Hall here on June 5, Wednesday,  refused to conduct the rituals and left the place saying he  has to attend another function, just because it was a Koraga wedding.

The wedding of GP President Sakamma was scheduled to be held at the hall and already a cash of Rs 42000 had been paid to the hall owner, towards rent, expenses towards arranging a priest and cleaning the hall.

However, as the families of the bride and groom arrived  amid the  beating of chende and drums, the priest realizing that it was a Koraga wedding left the place stating he had to attend another function. Realising the gravity of the situation, the brides brother Eshwar lodged a complaint with the Gangolli police.

The police personnel later ensured that the wedding took place at the right muhurat by summoning another priest from Karopady. However when lunch was being served, there arose another problem when the cleaning women staff refused to do their work. Finally, the cleaning works were done by some members of the Koraga community.

The Gangolli police have registered a case against the hall owner Sridhar Ganiga, priest and women cleaning staff for discriminating on the basis of caste, as per the complaint lodged by the bride’s brother.
