Mangaluru: Terming the state government’s overnight shutting down of Power TV undemocratic, the members of the Karnataka Journalist Union Dakshina Kannada unit, led by its general secretary Taranath Gatti Kapikad, submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister to Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra KV.
Apprising the DC about the incident on Tuesday, Taranath said that if the media goes against the law, then the government should fight in a legal way. “Taking a channel off-air overnight is similar to what had happened during the emergency time. This is unacceptable and should not happen in a democratic country like ours,” he said.
Taranath, on behalf of the journalist association, urged the government to allow Public TV to go live and resume operations, as the employees of the channel will be relieved by this.
DC Dr. Rajendra KV accepted the memorandum.
Office bearers of KJUDK and representatives of Power TV were present.
