Palm Sunday copy mainMangaluru: The Christians across the world are observing Palm Sunday and like in many places, the rituals became a closed-door affair for the faithful in Dakshina Kannada district with the lockdown in place.

The community members and the religious heads have shown the way by not resorting to any action that could lead to the spread of the coronavirus.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the ‘Passion Week’ and if not for the lockdown and Corona scare, each and every church would have been brimming with activities each day as the Christians are expected to spend their time praying and taking part in masses.

The Palm Sunday service is to commemorate Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, when palm branches were laid out on his path, before his arrest and crucifixion on Good Friday.

If not for the lockdown, this event would have been enacted on the roads, when devotees with freshly cut coconut leaves in hands walk saying prayers and singing hymns.

The special masses held during this period would have faithful in full attendance at the churches. But, sadly for all the devout Christians, for whom ‘Passion Week’ means to spend the days in prayer in churches, the national lockdown required everyone to stay indoors in an effort to stop of COVID-19 spread and they have abided by the guidelines.

The restrictions will be lifted two days after Easter Sunday.

The Bishop, having sought prior permission from authorities to conduct the holy Palm Sunday services inside the Cathedral with the minimum number of people, the entire ritual around Palm Sunday will be telecast live all over the diocese in and around Dakshina Kannada district.

All the faithful watch the rituals at home and virtually become part of the ceremonies.

All the churches across the district wore a deserted look, while the prayers went on unperturbed inside the closed doors.

Meanwhile in Kerala, where out of state’s 33.4 million population, 61.41 lakh are Christians, the same situation prevailed.

In churches across the state, authorities have asked the Palm Sunday service to be held indoors and there should be no more than four people present, including the priests and his associates.
