Mangaluru: “There is no need to furnish documents pertaining to date of birth of our parents during National Population Register (NPR) exercise and those who are opposing Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of India (NRC) are politicising the issue for their personal gain “ clarified BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta, here on Sunday, February 16.

Addressing the gathering during an interactive session organised by Citizens’ Forum in city, Dasgupta said, “ there is false propaganda that NPR is the first step of NRC. There is no connection between NPR and NRC. Most of the people do not have details of their parents’ date of birth and it is not necessary to enter such details in the questionnaires’ of NPR. However, we need to enter the mother tongue of our parents on NPR. The NPR is just to know the total population of our country and it would also help the government to undertake some welfare programmes.”

Dasgupta also informed that the reason behind opposing CAA and NRC is just for political gain.

“ People from the Muslim community are frightened that they would be displaced from our country if the NRC is implemented. Such fear was the result of false propaganda which are created by the opposition parties. No Muslim would be displaced from our country under CAA and NRC,” he informed.

Informing about the steady increase of Muslim population in Assam due to infiltration, he said, “ Illegal migrants keep on entering Assam. The Muslim population of Assam was 28.4 per cent in 1998 and it increased to 34 per cent in 2011. Hence, it is inevitable for us to protect our country from illegal migrants. The intention behind NRC is to check the illegal migrants and not to send our own people out of our country.”

Replying to why citizenship has been denied to persecuted Muslims under the CAA, Dasgupta said that no Muslims will face religious persecution in Muslim countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. “ The minorities who are living in these countries have been facing religious persecution. It is the duty of our country to give citizenship to them,” he said.
