Mangaluru: The Ministry of Railways (MoR), in its 100-Day Action Plan, has proposed to enable free Wi-Fi at 4,791 railway stations across the Indian Railway network.

In a press release, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Dr S G Yathish said that this initiative was taken to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Digital India’ plan. According to the plan, all 85 Non-Suburban Railway Stations (except halt stations) under the territorial jurisdiction of the division have now been equipped with free Wi-Fi.

The work, which was to be completed within 100 days, was achieved in a span of 75 days. Incidentally, this feat makes the Mysuru division the first in the Indian Railways to provide free Wi-Fi connectivity to its commuters at all its railway stations. Passengers can use the high-speed internet free of cost for the first 30 minutes.

RailTel Corporation of India, a public sector undertaking (PSU) that owns a pan-India optic fibre network along the railway tracks, was the executing agency while TATA Trusts provided the technical infrastructure.

The Wi-Fi service is being provided under ‘RailWire’, the retail broadband distribution model of RailTel. Designed to offer its users the best internet experience, RailWire Wi-Fi will be available to any user who has a functioning Wi-Fi connection on their smartphone.

This initiative is has been undertaken as part of the efforts being made to bridge the digital divide by providing a high-speed internet to all railway commuters. This facility shall enable passengers to stay connected while waiting for their train at the station. They can also use this facility to stream high-resolution videos, do office-work online etc.
