Mangaluru: National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK) launched its ‘One student, one sapling’ programme on August 15, marking the Independence Day celebration. The unique programme was kickstarted by NITK Director Umameshwar Rao and Registrar Ravindranath K by planting a sapling each. They were followed by students and faculties of the institution. The idea of the programme is to have each and every student plant a sapling and nurture it during their stay in the institution. As of now, 6000 saplings have been planted by the students.

Earlier, addressing the Independence Day celebration, the Director said that it is the responsibility of each and every Indian to remember the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters. “Our freedom is the gift given to us by our freedom fighter. If not for their sacrifices, we would have never seen this day,” he said adding that the responsibility of each and every citizen in the country is increasing and the institution too should take up the role of moulding responsible citizens for the nation.
He stressed the need to conserve nature, especially at the given point of time when the results of exploitation of nature are manifesting in various forms. He said that in coming days, the institution must strive to become a plastic-free campus.
