Kasaragod: The homeopathic hospital in Kumdaje built to treat endosulfan victims is ready for inauguration since six months but it has not been thrown open for use because power connection has not been provided to the building.

The hospital established to replace the existing one functioning from the gram panchyath office in Marpanadka was built at cost of Rs 9 lakhs . The new building provided with electrical wiring and compound wall was supposed to be inaugurated six months ago after people complained of inadequate facilities in the existing hospital.

Kumdaje village surroundings have many endosulfan victims seeking treatment. Endosulfan was sprayed in the cashew plantations at some places in the district regularly three times every year. It was sprayed aerially by using helicopters and the aerial spraying of Endosulfan was undertaken to contain the menace of the tea mosquito bug.

As the plantations are mostly in mountainous areas, the pesticide drained and got washed down the slopes during rains into drinking water below. The consumption of this water by the people and animals resulted in diseases ranging from physical deformities, cancers, birth disorders and damages to brain and nervous system.

The hopes of affected people are unlikely to revive unless the concerned authorities take decisive action to  start operations in the new facility.
