A primary investigation conducted by the police revealed that Sam Pater is the mastermind of the team who plans the scams to target vulnerable people.

How did the gang come to be arrested by the police?

The city police, who have been on high alert after the Independence Day celebrations and an intelligence report warning of a bomb threat by terrorists, police were tipped off about a government car without a number plate, but bearing a fake board of the Director of the NCIB, near the Pumpwell Circle. Based on the direction of Mangaluru Commissioner of Police P S Harsha, a team from the East Police Station rushed to the spot and questioned the inmates of the car in question.

The gang initially introduced themselves as members of the NCIB, however, they attempted to make a break for it when the pressure got to them. Sam Peter, their leader, also attempted to fool the cops by producing his fake identity card identifying him as the NCIB director. However, the police succeeded in detaining the gang and seized two cars worth Rs 20 lakh, two revolvers, 10 mobile phones and eight live bullets from their possession.

It is learnt that the gang was in the city for the past two days and had taken a room on rent at a lodge located near Pumpwell circle.

Speaking about the progress of the investigation, compol Harsha on Saturday, August 17, said, “The gang was arrested while they were trying to dupe people while disguised as the NCIB. Two locals, G Moideen alias Cheriyan and A K Abdul Latheef, were working as the gang’s informants, supplying them with information about the local people who were potential targets. Further details of the gang and details of their previous extortion jobs are yet to be uncovered.”

No terror link

When asked if the gang had links to any terrorist organisations, the commissioner stated that preliminary investigations found no ties to any terror outfits.

Special team constituted

A special team of police, including DCPs Lakshmi Ganesh (Crime and Traffic) and Arunamshu Giri ( Law and Order), ACP Bhaskar Okkaliga and Mangaluru East Police Inspector Shantharam, has been formed to gather more information about the gang.
