Mangaluru: MLA U T Khader on Saturday, May 23, questioned the government’s decision to impose a “Sunday Lockdown” and opined that it was unscientific.
In a series of tweets, Khader informed that the Sunday lockdowns are unscientific and suggested that the government should have consulted with experts before taking a decision on the lockdown.
“Under Lockdown 4.0, Karnataka Govt has decided to enforce a total lockdown on May 24 & May 31 Sundays by suspending all relaxation, including public transport services & closure of shops.Only essential services will be allowed while a curfew will be in effect the whole day to restrict movement of people.On the other hand @BSYBJP @csogok has issued fresh guidelines yet again stating that Marriage events that were already scheduled on sunday will be considered as a special case as per govt guidelines,” he wrote in a series of tweets.
He then informed that he has spoken over the phone with Chief Secretary Vijay Bhaskar to clarify the gudelines, “…he has assured that he will discuss further with the concerned officials & take appropriate decision on Sunday Curfew. As per GOK guidelines @DCDK9 can implement it,” he added.
It can be recalled that a curfew is being imposed in the state from 7 PM on Saturday till 7 AM on Monday. “When and how people can move around in DK District during curfew hours. Will they be allowed to go for grocery shopping? Can people walk to the shop next to their house? Will an individual be allowed to move from point A to B within district without being stopped by the police or facing legal action ?” he asked.
Additionally, he informed that the city police commissioner has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC, banning assembly of four or more people in one place.
“Moreover several Mluru NGOs have been confused on the controversial guidelines issued by GOK & @DCDK9 has already ordered Lockdown. in the district from 7pm on Saturday, May 23 till 7am on Monday, May 25. NGOs have urged me to clarify regarding the same as Eid-ul -Fitr falls on Sunday, if curfew is imposed then what are the guidelines to be followed by the people,” he wrote.
He explained that the NGOs have requested that alternate arrangements be made for the movement of people to allow at least three to four people in a group to walk out to buy essential services and distribute food for the needy on Eid-ul-Fitr.
