Mangaluru: The petty offenders who are forced to remain behind the bars, unable to pay the bail amount would receive help, the Karnataka State Minorities Commission Chairman G A Bava has said.

Addressing the reporters here on Tuesday, July 16, Bava said that more than 35 percent of the undertrials in Bengaluru jail belong to the minority community and some jail inmates are behind the bars because of their unable to pay the bail amount. Though some are convicted and they can be released if they pay the penalty amount, they are still behind the bars, unable to pay the penalty. The State Minorities Commission would help those petty offenders from minority community in release from jail, he informed.

Bava also said that he would consult NGOs, bar association among others to help such petty offenders from other communities. “We are not going to help the habitual offenders but we would help only petty offenders. It is our duty to bring reformation in their life”, he added.

Prior to the press conference, he had visited Natekal and Deralakatte minority hostels, post metric hostel in Chilimbi and St. Joseph’s Old Age Home in city. “Though more students can be accommodated in minority hostels, only 50 percent have enrolled. I will find out the reason behind this and try to address the problems, if any”, he added.

Bava also assured that he would strive hard to construct Haj Ghar and Haj Bhavan in Mangaluru and attempts would be made to acquire the properties of Wakf Board, which are allegedly encroached by some mighty people.
