Mangaluru: Home minister Basavaraj Bommai, on Thursday, inaugurated residential apartments for 112 police constables constructed under the police housing scheme in Mangaluru.
The apartments were constructed at a cost of Rs 21.63 crores at the Mangaluru sub division in Panambur.
Inaugurating the quarters, Bommai congratulated the 112 police constables on their new homes and said, “So far, 51 per cent of the police force have been provided with houses in the state. We are expecting to reach 75 per cent of the force. As the the police housing scheme 2025 has already been sanctioned, nearly 11,000 houses will be constructed in the next 5 years.”
Speaking further, he informed taht a request has been made for suitable land for the first phase of the project from all the police commissionerates. “Right now, there is a demand for 192 houses, of which 72 houses will be constructed in the land allotted. The rest will be sanctioned once the land is acquired,” he said.
“We have planned for the overall development of the city with regard to infrastructure, recruitment, training, KSRP battalion and also putting up a master plan for a traffic system for areas under the corporation limits, which will be considered in the budget,” he added.
He stated that the Coastal police will be equipped with high speed boats to combat illegal movements, and improve the night beat system since there have been incidents of graffiti scribbled on walls supporting terrorist groups.
“As it has been brought to my notice that CCTVs were out of order during the graffiti incident, nearly 1,200 CCTVs will soon be installed under the Smart City project,” Bommai added.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Vikash Kumar, who was also present, said that the residential apartment project was a much needed project for the police constables and 112 senior-most policemen were allotted houses out of the hundreds of applications. “The requirements of houses for policemen have been submitted to the DGP and police housing corporation. There is a requirement of nearly 200 houses, of which 72 have been approved. We will be looking for a suitable land where houses could be constructed for this purpose,” he added.
