Mangaluru: Close on the heels of the union government’s decision to privatise Mangalore International Airport along with the other five airports, two companies reportedly came to Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) to conduct an assessment. However, they were forced to go without conducting an assessment as they faced stiff opposition from the employees of MIA.

It is said that representatives from GMR Airport Private Ltd and National Investment and Infrastructure Fund have came to MIA on Monday, January 14, and attempted to conduct an independent assessment to see whether it is profitable to take the management of MIA or not. Though they approached the Airport Director and had a discussion with him, they could not conduct an assessment due to the stiff opposition from the employees.

When contacted, Airport Director V V Rao, he confirmed the visit of the two companies. However, he did not reveal the names of companies which came to conduct an assessment. “As the representatives were prevented from entering the operational area of MIA by the employees, they left after having a discussion with me”, he informed.

It may be noted that the government had decided to privatise six of its airports Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. Though the Congress leaders of Mangaluru have been blaming the Narendra Modi-led union government for privatising the airports, MP Nalin Kumar informed on Tuesday that the decision of privatising the airport was taken during the administration of UPA government.
