Mangaluru: “Acquiring mere qualification is not enough to be employable in different sectors. There is also a need to possess essential skills,” opined Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Dr P S Yadapadithaya here on Monday, September 16.

He was addressing a gathering at the launching ceremony of the Skill India programmes organised by the Mangalore Institute of Fire and Safety Engineering (MIFSE), in association with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), at the Town Hall.

“The certificates which you acquire from colleges will not help you secure a job in any institution. It is your capability to perform tasks which will make you successful in the job market. In order to secure a job in any institution, a candidate must have five basic factors like knowledge, attitude, skill, habits and values,” he said.

He also shed light on the Skill India Mission of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which aims to train over 40 crore people in India by 2022. “This mission aims at vocational training and certification of youth for better livelihood and respect in society. As over 4000 different courses are available under this mission, the people should utilise this opportunity properly,” he said.

Dr Jagadeesha, former dean academic, Karnataka Open University (KSOU) Mysuru spoke about the Skill India programmes. “A skill is nothing but the capability to perform a task. In this modern world, skill is imperative and without this, one cannot survive in competitive fields. Hence, we need to focus on obtaining skills by utilising the different skill development programmes,” he said.

MLA and former minister U T Khader officially launched the Skill India programmes. He also handed over the NSDC certificate to MIFSE president Vinod K John.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, Nehru Yuva Kendra district youth coordinator Raghuveer Sootarpete, Analyst of NSDC Rajath Sachdeva, MIFSE secretary Manoj P V, principal Yashavanth Gopal Shetty and others were present.
