Mangaluru: Business establishments and apartment buildings have failed to install their own waste management units in their premises despite instructions from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). Hence, the Corporation has planned to penalize those who do not adhere to the Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM), 2016, from February 10.
Speaking to the reporters here on Friday, February 7, MCC Commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde said, “Even though warnings were given, many apartments and business establishments have not installed waste handling units. Only a few apartments have followed the instructions. Hence, the MCC has decided the officials to penalize those who are not adhering to the guidelines. It is mandatory to install waste handling units in all apartments and business outlets. Hence, as per the direction of the National Green Tribunal(NGT) and Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM), 2016, the MCC will levy a fine of up to Rs 25,000 on bulk waste generators for not installing waste management units from February 10. They will be penalized up to Rs 50,000 for the second time and if they still do not comply, cases will be booked against them.”
Shanady also informed that notices have been issued to over 1,948 establishments in the city. A total of 2,820 individual houses have installed waste management units so far, he added.
It can be recalled that the MCC had instructed all bulk waste generators including apartments, hotels, marriage halls, small industries, chicken stalls, educational institutions and hostels to have their own waste recycling units by October end last year. During the local body elections, a meeting was once again called and a second instruction was issued. Notices were also issued to apartment associations.
