Mangaluru: MCC Mayor Premananda Shetty on Friday, May 21 urged the public residing under the limits of Mangaluru City Corporation to segregate dry and wet waste, before it is handed over to the civic workers or during the door-to-door collection.

Speaking in a press meet the mayor said, “People should be working with MCC to dispose of solid waste in a scientific manner and separate dry and wet waste. This will help in the disposal of solid waste. Compulsory waste separation should be achieved according to scientific principles.

“A few of the civic workers are infected by Covid-19 virus as they involve in the segregation of waste. Hence, keeping the health of civic workers in mind and scientific disposal of waste, it is the responsibility of people, he added.

MCC commissioner Akshay Sridhar said, “The MCC has made a request. To keep our environment safe, people should work together to dispose of waste in a scientific manner. We may also be able to avoid the tragedy that occurred in 2019. If members of the public fail to follow the rules, they will be fined between Rs 5,000 and Rs 25000. The public should contact the helpline numbers 155313 and 9449007722 (Whatsapp) if they have any complaints.”

Deputy mayor Sumangala Rao was present.
