Mangaluru: Maravoor bridge that connects to the Mangalore International airport developed a crack due to heavy rain that lashed on Tuesday June 14.
According to the sources, the crack is deep and wide and it is said that the bridge might collapse at any time.
Keeping in mind the safety of the people vehicular movement has been cancelled on the bridge.
Traffic is diverted to two alternative routes. The commuters can use either the Kavoor-Kulur-KBS Jokatte-Porkody-Bajpe route or Pacchanady-Vamanjoor-Gurpur-Kaikamba-Bajpe route.
Speaking to News Karnataka Sudhakar Shetty, the contractor informed that the bridge was built on well foundation and had slight cracks initially. Due to heavy lashes now the crack is deep and wide. The Public Works Department (PWD) had decided to restore Maravoor bridge after the construction of the new bridge and now as the restoration work will commence, we have to stop the traffic. Informing that the PWD may start the restoration work, immediately, he added that the new bridge may get ready by next year.
