Mangaluru mayoral elections on Mar 9, women in race this time

Mangaluru: The mayoral elections to elect new mayor and deputy mayor will be held on March 9 as the tenure of incumbents expires on March11.The elections will be held at 9 am on March 9, under the supervision of Senior IAS officer and Assistant Divisional Commissioner of Mysore Jayanthi, who has been assigned the roll of electoral officer.

At the same time, elections for the posts of presidents of standing committees too will be held.

The post of mayor has been reserved for women (General) and the deputy to Scheduled Caste community.

All the 14 women corporators will be in the race for the post of mayor this time, the prominent ones being Kavitha Sanil, Appi and Hosabettu ward Corporator Prathiba Kulai. Both Kavitha Sanil and Appi are presidents of health and finance standing committees in the existing set up.

Derebail corporator Rajneesh is in the race for the post of Deputy Mayor. Opposition BJP is likely to field its candidate for the post of mayor despite insufficient numbers, but has not named the candidate yet.
