Mangaluru: A memorial erected in memory of former Union minister Late George Fernandes was inaugurated near Bejai Church on Sunday, February 23.
Inaugurating the memorial, Bishop of the Mangalore Diocese Rev Dr Peter Paul Saldanha recalled the immense contribution of the late former Union minister.
"George was the voice of the voiceless and strength of the weak. He showed the power of Democracy through his works. By starting the Konkan railway, he not only connected two destinations but also connected the minds of the people. He never earned for himself, but worked for all of society," he said.
He then blessed the memorial.
Micheal Fernandes, George Fernandes' brother thanked everyone for constructing the memorial. "George had formed a co-operative society which is now a bank and has 2000 crore transactions and 30 branches in and around Mumbai. It should also get a branch in Bejai in his memory," he opined.
Considering George's contribution, the Government of India has conferred the Padma Vibhushan Award on him posthumously. In the wake of this historical event, a tomb has been erected at Fernandes's birthplace under the initiative of the Bejai church with an attempt to commemorate the great achievements of the great leader.
Bejai Church parish priest Fr Wilson Vitus D Souza, assistant parish priest Fr Pramod Crasta, Fr Robert D Souza, Bejai Parish Pastoral Council vice president Francis Ashok Pinto, secretary Preethi Gomes, Bejai Parish Pastoral Council member Vincent, former MLA J R Lobo, corporators Shashidhar Hegde, Sudheer Shetty, Lancelot Pinto, MLC Ivan D Souza and others were present.
Robin Cutinha compered the programme and Corporator Lancelot Pinto proposed the vote of thanks.
