Mangalore Varsity makes rainwater harvesting compulsory in all colleges

Mangaluru: Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) has been made compulsory in all colleges affiliated to the Mangalore University. It has already issued a circular to all colleges in this regard.

Dakshina Kannada district has been witnessing a drought-like situation over the past five years. Though the government departments are supposed to install water harvesting systems in its buildings and set an example for others, many have not adopted the systems yet. The Mangalore University, however, has made RWH compulsory in all its affiliated colleges.

Registrar of Mangalore University (Evaluation) Prof A M Khan informed that a circular has been issued to all 210 affiliated colleges in this regard and they have been directed to send a report on their rainwater harvesting systems within 15 days. Informing that the students of NSS can be given the duty of installing rainwater harvesting equipment, he assured that the, should the need arise, the University would provide the funds for the same.

PG students should plant one sapling each

The Mangalore University has also has made it compulsory for students enrolling in Post Graduation courses with them, to plant a sampling at the University premises and nurture the sapling for two years. It is the responsibility of individual students to care for the plants. He or she can display their name on the sapling. 

The University also instructed all the colleges to hold cleanliness drives in their respective premises as part of the ‘Swaccha Bharata Mission’. The colleges have also been asked to hold these cleanliness drives at least once a month.
