Malaria, Dengue Awareness campaign

Mangalore : A Dengue and Malaria Awareness Campaign will be held in Mangalore from June 10 to 18 under the aegis of the Mangalore City Corporation considering the dangers of the spread of Dengue and Malaria during monsoons.

Informing this to reporters, MCC Joint Commissioner Srikanth Rao said as part of the campaign 600 students  from 21 nursing colleges will take part in the campaign and make a door-to-door visits to houses in all wards of Mangalore City Corporation limits.

They will not only create an awareness on the hazards of Dengue and Malaria, their symptoms and precautionary measures that need to be taken, but will also identify mosquito breeding spots in various areas, Srikanth Rao said.

About 1,560 cases of malaria and 42 cases of dengue were reported in the MCC limits from January 2013, the officer said and added no deaths were however reported due to Malaria or Dengue.

MCC Health Officer Dr Sudarshan said that seven blood testing units have been functioning in the city, while six more would be opened soon at Kadri, Panjimogaru, KSRTC bus stand, Kunjathbail and Kavoor. Presently blood test units are located at Lalbagh, Lady Hill, Jeppu, Wenlock, Bengre and district laboratory he informed.

District Vector-borne Disease Control Officer Dr Arun Kumar and MCC superintending engineer B S Balakrishna were also present.
