Mangaluru: The three-day annual fruit and flower show, jointly organised by the Department of Horticulture, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, district administration and Siri Horticulture Association, will be inaugurated at Kadri Park on January 24.

Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary will inaugurate the show and Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath will preside over the programme. Horticulture Department Deputy Director H R Nayak told reporters here on Tuesday, January 21, that a demonstration on hand-gardening and terrace gardening will be organised as part of the three-day programme. There will be an exhibition showcasing nursery owners, farm implements, seeds and fertilisers, organic products, horticulture products, and value-added products. Demonstrations on drip irrigation, a model of apiculture, mushroom cultivation, and cut flowers will also make up the show. Over 150 stalls will be selling flower seeds as well as organic and horticulture products, he further informed.

Entry tickets have been priced at Rs 20 for adults and Rs 10 for students between the age group of 12 and 18. However, school children accompanied by their teachers and the differently-abled will be allowed to enter the exhibition without paying any fee. The department is organising a unique competition for school children this year that entails them to identify the seeds of various fruits and flowers on the second day of show (January 25) between 3 pm and 4 pm, Nayak informed.

This is being done in order to create awareness about the different variety of vegetables and flowers as well as horticulture in general.
