ICGS Varaha arrives at its base in Panambur

Mangaluru: ICGS Varaha, the fourth in a series of seven 98-m offshore patrol vessels (OPV) of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), which was recently commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the Chennai Port, joined its base in Panambur on Tuesday, October 15.

When it arrived at the New Mangaluru Port near Panambur Beach, officers and crew, led by Dushyant Kumar, welcomed it with music. This ship weighs around 2100 tonnes and is equipped with two 9100 kW diesel engines. It can travel about 5000 nautical miles in 20 days at sea.

Coast Guard, DIG SS Dasila said that Varaha, which will be based at the New Mangalore port, will also be involved in the defence of the west coast, namely Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep. This ship will be under the administrative and operational control of Commander Coast Guard Region (West). It will cover the coast up to Kanyakumari, and strengthen the ICG’s capabilities to respond to threats of maritime terrorism, smuggling and challenges of maritime law enforcement.

The ship will have 14 officers and 89 men on board. It has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen and Toubro at its Kattupalli shipbuilding yard in northern Chennai.

Features of ICGS Varaha

It has the latest navigation and communication equipment. It also has some of the most advanced sensors and machinery, as well as a 33-mm gun. It has been fitted with 12.7 mm gun with fire control system, sophisticated radar, sensor and high-speed boats. The ship’s special features include the integrated bridge system, automated power management system and indigenously built Integrated platform management system. The ship is also designed to carry one twin-engine helicopter and four high-speed boats.  

Deputy Commandant of the vessel Satish Kumar, senior security officers Raj Kamal Sinha, Lakshmikant Ghazbhiye and CISF officer Ashutosh Gaur were also present.
