Mangaluru: Demanding a revision of their daily wages, a group of Hamali workers staged a day-long hunger strike at the ‘Karmika Katte’ near the old port on Tuesday, October 15.

The protest was organised under the aegis of ‘Shramika Sangha’.

Addressing the protesters CITU district general secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said that Hamali workers play a vital role in business activities. “They are hard-working. They carry loads of goods on their head to eke out a living. Unfortunately, they are denied facilities from the government. Besides that, the traders are not consenting to revise their daily wages. If the traders are not ready to fulfil the demands of the Hamali workers, the protest will be intensified in the coming days,” he said.

Hamali Workers president Willy Wilson accused the traders of trying to divide the Hamali workers’ unity through their hidden agenda. “However, the traders will not succeed in their attempt as Hamali workers’ unity will never be broken by anybody. Instead of indulging in hidden tactics, the traders should revise the daily wages immediately,” he said.

Leaders Hamza Jeppinamogaru, Siddiq Bengre, Moideen Kalkatta, Madhav Kavoor, Basheer, Farooq Ullal and others were present.
