Sullia: Drinking water paucity has naturally hit several pockets of the district, but here in Markanja and Aranthodu villages, there is enough water but still pots have ran dry, thanks to callous attitude of the forest officials.

It is said that forest staffers have damaged the drinking water pipeline here affecting 15 families.

The families living in Ajjikallu, Kattakodi, Arathodu, Bajinadka areas have been drawing water that remains filled in craters in the deep jungles. They had been procuring this water using pipes.

But, on Wednesday evening the forest officials resorted to pulled off and damaging the thin pipes used by the villagers for lifting water, citing forest fire as the reason.

They are mainly economically backward SC/ST families. With this mindless move of the forest officials, the people and their domestic animals have been left in lurch. Since this natural source provided enough water for their needs, the families never spared a thought on demanding the authorities for an open well or a borewell.

The families pooled money together and had laid pipeline as long as 1700 mts to draw water from the forest and now with the pipes pulled out, the families have been left in dire straits. They had spent about Rs one lakh to make this water facility for themselves.

The families say that they had sought permission of the forest department before laying the pipes and now if the department does not want the families to continue using the water from the forest, the department must make alternative arrangement.

However, the forest officials have said that they will re-lay the pipeline and restore the water supply as it is.
