First-of-its-kind half marathon in Sullia attracts thousands of sports enthusiasts

Sullia: With an overwhelming response from the sportsmen and women, the ‘Sullia Half Marathon’ sporting event witnessed thousands of participants, here on Saturday, January 19.

The first-of-its-kind state level event was organised by the Sullia Athletic Association in collaboration with the Karnataka Athletic Association, Dakshina Kannada district Athletic Association and KVG Institution.

The marathon which began from the KVG campus sports complex was flagged off by the President of Karnataka State Athletics Association and Jaya Karnataka organisation chief N Muthappa Rai.

Muthappa Rai said, “The Karnataka Athletic Association is determined to identify the sporting talents from the rural areas, who are capable of achieving a milestone by participating at the Olympics.”

“Shortly, an action plan related to the development of infrastructure would be initiated and this marathon is organised to motivate the sporting talents”, he added.

Approximately 2.688 participants participated in the event.

For men, it was 21 km and women 10 km. In the masters’ category for men above 45 years it was 4 km and for women above 35 years of age it was 3 km.

In the 16 years category for boys, it was 4 km and for girls 3 km.

In the half marathon, the first place was bagged by Alva’s College students.

21 km category

First place–Basavaraj N G from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Second place–Prashanth Kumar from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Third place–Praveen Javanth from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Fourth place–Narasinga Patel from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Fifth place–Chandan Kumar, Bengaluru

Women’s 10 km category

First place–Archana K M from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Second place–Suma from Nitte Institute

Third place–Malashree from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Fourth place–Jayalakshmi from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Fifth place–Chitra P, Puttur

Masters men’s category (above 45 years)

First place–Ranjith Shivaji, Belagavi

Second place–Annappa K H, Davangere

Third place–Chandrashekhar A, Kadaba

Women’s category (above 35 years)

First place–Kamalakshi K K, Madikeri

Second place–Yashodha P V, Sullia

Third place–Divya Kumari, Sullia

16 years category (boys)

First place–Bharamappa Bhimappa Nandyagol from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Second place–Yuvaraj Lakshman, Nehru Memorial P U College, Sullia

Third place–Gautam, Udupi

16 years category (girls)

First place–Chitra N C from Alva’s Institution, Moodabidri

Second place–Prateeksha, Nitte

Third place–Shreya M, Shri Sharada P U College, Sullia

Prizes worth Rs 3 Lakh were handed over to the winners of the marathon with a certificate.

President of Academy of Liberal Education Dr. K V Chidanand presided over the valedictory programme and the prizes to the winners were distributed.

Retired superintendent of District Sports Authority, Kushalappa Gowda was honoured on the occasion.

Member of the working committee, Athletic Federation of India Chandrashekhar Rai, trainer from Sports Authority of India Kurian Mathews, President of Sullia Taluk Athletic Association Mailappa Gowda Kombettu and others were present.
