Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District Committee of Karnataka Journalist Union and Karnataka Theological College celebrated Press Day here on Wednesday July 1.
Pioneer of Kannada journalism and the founder of “Mangalura Samachara”, Hermann Friedrich Mögling was commemorated on the occasion by garlanding his statue.
Mangaluru City Corporation Mayor Premananda Shetty after garlanding the statue of Mogling said, “journalism being the fourth pillar of our democratic system is performing its function responsibly. Journalists play an important role by separating the vicious and virtuous acts and thus maintain the fabric of the society. That the first Kannada language paper was published in Mangaluru is a matter of pride for us. Thus, it is our duty to commemorate the founder Hermann Friedrich Mögling.
Addressing the gathering, Karnataka Theological College Principal Dr. H.M. Watson said, “Mogling and Kittel are not just the assets for the Christian community. His contribution towards the Kannada language inspite of being a citizen of a foreign country is incredible. A public place in Mangaluru should posses their statue or any street of Mangaluru should be named after them so that people learn about their contributions.
On the occasion, Karnataka Journalist Union Harish District President Harish Bantwal said Karnataka Journalist Union has been celebrating the Press Day every year commemorating pioneer Hermann Mogling.
At the event, Tulu Academy former Bennet Amanna gave information on Mogling’s contribution to the field of Kannada Journalism and Dasa Literature.
Karnataka Journalist Union Vice President Lakshman Kundar, General Secretary Taranath Gatti Kapikad, Secretary Canute Pinto, District Secretary Eshwar Varanasi, and Executive Committee member Hameed Vittal were present.
