Mangaluru: To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Dakshina Kannada district’s BJP unit is organising a series of programmes from October 20 till November 5. The event was formally launched in the city on Sunday, October 20.
MP and BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel launched the programme by garlanding a statue of Mahatma Gandhi and later, a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar, near the Town Hall.
Addressing the gathering, he said, “India got its independence under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and his non-violent movement played an important role in achieving this for our country. As his ideas and idealisms like nonviolence, peace and cleanliness are relevant to the present circumstances, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed us to commemorate his 150th birthday anniversary in a grand way. The BJP will take up his ideas and idealisms during this series of programmes throughout the country.”
All the BJP leaders were seen wearing a ‘Gandhi topi’ (cap) during the programme and a procession was also carried out from the Town Hall to the Karavali Ground in Lalbagh. Hundreds of party workers and leaders were part of the procession.
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, Sullia MLA S Sangara, District BJP president and Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat president Meenakshi Shantigodu and others were present.
