Still it is in trouble and Kannada schools are facing closure for want of students,” said Pundalika Halambi, State President of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 8th district level Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at the Sri Ananthapadmanabha Sannidhi Hall of Hebri held on June 6, Thursday under the aegis of the Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishat.
Continuing, Halambi said Kannada would not have faced its present problem had the government implemented the Sarojini Mahishi report. The government must implement the report at the earliest, said Halambi.
He also demanded 50 per cent reservation in seats in professional colleges for students who have studied in Kannada medium. Scholarships as well as reservation in government jobs should be given to Kannada medium students , he said adding it is only such measures that can help promote Kannada.
Ambatanaya Mudrady, former president of the Udupi district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, presided over the function. He stressed the need for such conventions to strive hard to promote Kannada. He also pointed out that there were some schools which conducted classes in English medium in the name of Kannada medium.
Coastal Development Authority Chairman Tingale Vikramarjun Hegde inaugurated the book exhibition arranged as part of the conference while Ramesh Rao of Artists Forum Udupi inaugurating the painting exhibition. Harikrishna Punaroor, former president of Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, released new books.
Suma N Adyantaya, Hebri Gram Panchayat President, BC Rao Shivapura, President of Karkala Taluk Sahitya Parishat, and several others were present.
