Mangaluru: ‘The Freedom of Religion Acts already exists in the state. Why does it need the name of Love Jihad?” asked MLA U T Khader on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference in the city, he said that the Congress government was the first to bring in the Conversion Prohibition Act. He then accused the BJP of not undertaking any pro-people acts and just looking for ways to confuse the people.
He also added that a matter of such seriousness should be discussed in the Parliament. If the law is intended to be brought up, a parliamentary session should be called to discuss it further. Laws should be the same for everyone, he said.
Pointing out to the use of an Arabic name for the proposed law in Karnataka, he asked why it is only targetting particular religions and accused the BJP of misguiding people with the same.
District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar, MLA Shakunthala Shetty, corporator Shashidhar Hegde, Sahul Hameed, Nirajpal and others were also present.
