Mangaluru: When the opposition party members in the Centre are keen to know the measures that were taken to curb terrorism activities, environmental pollution, increasing trend of epidemic diseases among others, the ministers concerned clearly replied about the action taken by the government. When the opposition party members took the finance minister to task for implementing the Goods and Service Tax (GST) claiming that it had harmed people, the finance minister explained the merits of GST and informed how it had increased the income of the country.
Though some ministers were found to be a little nervous while they were questioned by the opposition party members, they mustered up the confidence when the ruling party members supported them to answer the queries. Don’t be confused. Yes, it was a typical scenario in a Parliamentary session but not in New Delhi, but in the Nethravathi auditorium of Zilla Panchayat building in Urwastore on Tuesday, July 16!
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and United Nations Development Programme in association with Nehru Yuva Kendra Mangaluru, had jointly organised a ‘District Youth Parliament’ in which over 140 students of different colleges participated in the programme. Prior to the discussion, the new mock MPs who were elected from different constituencies took an oath and promised that they would deliver their duties properly and uphold the constitutional values.
Later, the mock prime minister introduced the ministers of his cabinet in the whole session. When the question hour started, both the opposition party and ruling party members actively participated in the discussion. Issues like demonetisation, women and child safety, health issues also came up for discussion and the ministers concerned answered with appropriate statistics.
The programme was inaugurated by Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Dr. P S Yadapadithaya. After inaugurating the programme, Yadapadithaya said, “ Those who want be the best parliamentarians should possess qualities like courage, confidence, cooperation, coordination among others. However, success prevails only when there is hard work. There is no substitute for hard work”, he opined.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Selvamani R presided over the programme. District Youth Coordinator of Nehru Yuva Kendra Raghuveer Sootarpete welcomed the gathering. Associate Professor in Political Science , Mangalore University Dayananda Nayak among others was present.
