Mangaluru: Refusing to relocate to the APMC yard in Baikampady and insisting that they should be allowed to carry on their business in Central Market area, the fruit and vegetable vendors of Central Market have decided to announce an indefinite strike from Monday, April 6 onwards.

It can be noted that the district administration has asked wholesale dealers of Central Market to shift their activities to APMC market in Baikampady, in order to prevent huge gathering at Central Market.

Such decision was taken by the district administration as a precationary measure to prevent spreading of COVID-19.

However, wholesale dealers in Central Market have refused to do the same citing that they would have to face huge losses if they relocate.

“Baikampady APMC yard is on the outskirts of the city. The number of customers coming over to the APMC yard will be very less. This will leave us in dire straits,” said a vendor.

The vendors have urged the administration to instead locate a place near State Bank area of near Nehru Maidan so that they livelihood is intact.

This demand seems to have been not entertained by the district administration, which is hellbent on relocating the vendors outside the city.
