Mangaluru: ‘The International Mother Language Day’ was celebrated on February 21 at the Ravindra Kala Bhavan, University College, in the joint aegis of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Akademy and the Mangaluru University Beary Study Chair.
Dr Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Authority president, Girish Bhatt Ajakkala inaugurated the programme by watering the plant.
He said, "Language is a culture carrier. Language education needs to be given more importance. We need to be more alert on the survival of the local language.”
“The local languages have a history of their own. We are celebrating the language day in particular by holding a symposium by the luminaries in local languages,” said Rahim Uchil, president of Beary Sahitya Academy.
He explained that this is the first time such a programme is happening across all academies in South Canara. “This programme will act as a platform which will help to create a harmony between the languages,” expresses Rahim.
Poornima, Registrar, Beary Academy, Dr Harish A Principal of Mangalore University College, and Dr Nagaratna, NSS, Coordinator of Mangaluru University College were at the Dais. Lecturer Hyderali KA was present as a guest.

Shamsher Budoli, chanchalakshi members of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy were present on the occasion. Dr Abu Bakr Siddique, the coordinator of the Beary Study Chair presented an introductory speech. Poornima, Registrar, Beary Sahithya Academy welcomed the gathering. Kavya Hegde and Venkatesh Nayak moderated the programme and Surekha academy members proposed a vote of thanks.
