Mangaluru: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and former chief minister Siddaramaiah has condemned the Central Government's decision to bestow the Bharat Ratna on Veer Savarkar. He opined that such a decision reveals Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fake patriotism as Veer Savarkar had hatched the plan to eliminate Mahatma Gandhi.
Addressing the Congress party workers here on Friday, October 18, Siddaramaiah said that Veer Savarkar was a key accused in the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand "Mahatma" Gandhi, but was acquitted as there was no proper evidence of his involvement. "Savarkar was the president of the Hindu Mahasabha. Its members and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were associated with the British people. The people of Mangaluru should teach a befitting lesson to that political party which supports the murder of Mahatma Gandhi," he said.
Coming down heavily on the BJP government in the state, Siddaramaiah said, "Even though it has been three months since the BJP government came to power, no welfare programmes have been taken up so far. When the Congress government was in power, a lot of developmental works were taken up in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits. However, Congress failed to convince the people about its pro-people governance and the BJP secured a win with its false-propaganda and fake promises. The Congress party workers should visit every home and educate the people about the welfare programmes of the Congress government," he said.
MLA and former minister U T Khader, MLCs Harish Kumar, Ivan D'Souza, Prakash Rathode, former ministers Ramanath Rai, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Abhayachandra Jain, former MLAs Moideen Bava, J R Lobo, U R Sabhapati, district youth Congress president Mithun Rai and others were present.
