Mangaluru: Recently, a controversy regarding the naming of the Pumpwell flyover was stirred after some miscreants erected a banner with Veer Savarkar’s image and name. Now, a similar banner has been put up on the Thokkottu flyover suggesting that it be named after Veerarani Abbakka.
The banner was, however, removed to avert any escalation. Meanwhile, former MLA and Veerarani Abbakka Utsava committee president Jayaram Shetty defended those who put up the banner on the flyover saying, “As Rani Abbakka was the first freedom fighter of this country, we need to respect her contributions and there is nothing wrong in naming the Thokkottu flyover after her. However, some miscreants have vandalised her banner and this is not correct. In order to avoid confusion, the district administration should convene a meeting and officially name the flyover after put Veerarani Abbakka,” he stressed.
It can be recalled that some miscreants had put a banner reading ‘Veer Savarkar’ on the Pumpwell flyover which was taken down hours after the incident. After the images of the banner went viral on social media, the incident received a mixed response.
Now, the Veerarani Abbakka banner has created a fresh headache for the district administration.
