Mangaluru: Second World War Veteran Mark Rodrigues passed away on Friday, 6th November 2020 at the age of 98. He was born in Kundapura and was brought up in Mangaluru. He studied at St. Aloysius High School and then joined the British Indian Army in 1940 at the prime age of 18. Soon after, he was dispatched to the Middle East War Zone to fight for the Allies, as the Second World War was in progress during the time (1939-1945).
In 1942, Mark was captured by the German forces and was held as a ‘Prisoner of War’ in various camps in Europe. After 7 years of active military service, Mark returned to India.
Thereafter, Mark completed his mechanical engineering and joined the defence establishment. After serving 30 years in the Defense at Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, he retired as DRDO Scientist in 198, pri1. He then settled down in Mangalore at ‘Sheilanita’, Alvares Road, Kadri.
Mark was married to Emiliana who passed away in 2012. He was blessed with six daughters among whom his youngest daughter passed away in 1985.
Mark was a prolific Chess and Bridge player and won several accolades in the field.

Mark was the husband of late Emiliana Rodrigues, Father of Sylvia, Flavia/late Alexander, Anita, Rosita/Henry, Patricia and late Jeanette, grandfather of Pearl, Shirly, Darryl, Daniel, Sweeny, Ramola, Sandra, great grandfather of Kaitlyn, Karren, and Meghan.
Funeral cortege leaves his residence at ‘Sheilanita’ Alvares Road, Kadri to St Sebastian Church, Bendore on Sunday, November 8, at 3.00 pm. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 3.30 pm.
