Mangaluru: Former MLA J R Lobo has alleged that the names of over 5000 voters were deliberately deleted from the voters’ list in Mangaluru South constituency alone. He has urged the State Election Commission to conduct a probe into this.

Speaking to reporters at the District Congress Office on Thursday, April 18, Lobo said, “A total of 240 polling booths are there in Mangaluru South Assembly constituency and at least 20 to 25 names of voters deleted from each polling booth. The voters who came to the polling booth to cast their votes were forced to go back as their names were missing in the electoral list. If the same situation prevails in every Assembly constituency, over 50,000 voters might have missed their voting right. As it is a very serious case, we will file a complaint along with proper documents to the State Election Commission.”

Lobo also said that many people residing in multi-storeyed buildings were denied their voting right as their apartments do not have building numbers. “As Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is yet to give building numbers to some of the apartments due to some technical issues, thousands of people missed an opportunity to cast their votes”, he said.

“Some voters had cast their votes during the last assembly election, but they were denied their right now as their names were deleted from the voting list, this time. In some instances, the names of voters are there on the website but not in the voters’ list”, he lamented.

Congress leaders Ibrahim, Vishwas Kumar Das and Arun Coelho were present.
