Maddur: Two Dalit women were allegedly assaulted by a group of people belonging to a particular community over a land dispute at Hallikere village here, on December 1.

The victims are Jayamma and her niece Sushmita.

According to the police sources, accused Siddaiah and his sons Anchegowda and Mahesh have been arrested under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Jayamma and the attackers are neighbours and it is understood that over the past two years there were arguments and fights between the two parties over a particular land. As Jayamma felt that there was threat to her life, she had asked for security with Maddur Police, but no security was given to her. Sadly, the police did not even entertain her complaints.

On Sunday, December 1 morning when she was cleaning her house, the accused allegedly attacked her with sticks and even tried to misbehave with her.

At this point in time, Sushmita rushed to rescue her, who was also not spared by the attackers. She too was abused.

Later, both Jayamma and Sushmita were taken to the Maddur General Hospital.

Meanwhile, committee vice president of Dalit organization Huligepura Mahadevu has urged stringent action against the attackers. If not, they have warned of a protest at the Maddur police station.
