translatere 2Mandya: “About a thousand years ago, Kannada poets had said that all humans were one. They had said that, to lead a fruitful life, humans must inculcate humanity first and live among different sects of people with peace and harmony,” said Mandya district Deputy Commissioner Dr M V Venkatesh.

He spoke during a peace meeting, involving all community leaders, held at the Zilla Panchayat office in connection with the Ram Janmabhoomi–Babri Masjid row.

DC Venkatesh said, “After India achieved independence, the Indian Constitution gave each individual equal rights along with the freedom to lead a life in whichever way they want. But in certain circumstances, knowingly or unknowingly, we have destroyed the peace and harmony. As we are currently living in the 21st century, the need of the hour is a poverty-free, hunger-free and a literate society. Where there is peace and harmony, there lies development.”

Quoting the examples of Japan, he said, “In the year 1945, although Japan faced a nuclear explosion in Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II, they built a peaceful life and society on the whole with great difficulty. We too must try and inculcate such qualities.”

Throwing light on the Ayodhya land title issue, Venkatesh said, “The Ayodhya issue that occurred in the year 1992, is unimaginable. After decades of arguments and debates, finally the Supreme Court of India will be pronouncing a verdict on November 17. The court will take a call, taking into consideration all the facts. Hence, we all must accept the verdict with an open mind and not be vengeful.”

Giving a peace call to all the religious leaders, he said, “On the verdict day, no one shall celebrate or term it as a ‘black day’. We all must abide by the law and respect the Indian Constitution. A small communal spark in one part of the country might blow out of proportion like wildfire. Being religious leaders, you all must take a call to establish peace and co-operate with the district administration. If any untoward incidents are observed, please report it to the nearest police station.”

Superintendent of Police K Parashuram, DySPs Gangadhar Swamy, Shailendra and others were present.
