Madikeri: Driven out of their own homelands decades ago, the Tibetans found their ‘second home’ in Bylakppa, 35 kms away from Madikeri, due to the generosity of the Indian and the Karnataka Government in 1959.

Having started a new life here, they have become an inseparable part of the Kodagu district.

They have cultivated land, produced grains and supported the Indian economy. They have employed scores of the local population in their farms and given them jobs and now when the entire world is reeling under the COVID-19 crisis, here in Bylakoppa, the Tibetans have come forward to do their bit.

The Sera Je Secondary School located in the Bylakoppa Tibetan camp donated Rs 1.5 lakh to the PM CARES Fund and Rs 1 lakh to the Chief Minister’s relief fund last week.

Not only that, the Sera Je Secondary School Management, on Sunday, April 26, distributed more than thousand ration kits to the poor in 23 villages including Haleyur, Bylakoppa, Koppa, Doddasthur, Doddaharve, and Rani Gate.

Periyapatna MLA K Mahadev was present during the distribution programme.

The school also donated a month’s salary of the teaching staff to the CM’s relief fund.

The school has always been at the forefront to help whenever the region faced any problems. During the recent calamities, the school has done a yeomen service. During the 2004 Tsunami, the school donated generously to the CM’s Relief Fund.

When contacted, school principal Rinchen Tsering said that it is their duty to join hands and work for the betterment of the country.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc across the globe. Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama expressed solidarity with the Indian government in the fight against COVID-19,” he said adding that the Dalai Lama had also commended the contribution of the school.

Sera Je Secondary School, established before 1970, has been providing quality education to more than 600 students from various parts of the country.
